Chicago Mart Plaza Voted Best of River North

The award winning, LEED certified Chicago Mart Plaza has been voted River North’s Best Green Business of 2011 by votes cast by more than 3,000 Chicago, businesses, residents and consumers.  The Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza has proven their dedication to both the local River North community and global environment with measurable “green” actions with their day-to-day business practices, in the production and distribution of their products and services and in the structure of their building.

In September, 2009, The Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza announced its LEED® Gold Certification (Existing Buildings, Operations & Maintenance) by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-EBOM), making the hotel the first LEED certified in the city of Chicago.  LEED® certification is the nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The 521-room Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza is part of the 2.25 million square foot, 25-story 350 West Mart Center which has also been awarded LEED® Gold certification.

The hotel, originally built in 1977, recently underwent a $20 million redesign that included extensive ecological measures including installing solar film on many of its windows to reduce solar heat gain and thus reduce air conditioning load on the building. They have adopted a Sustainable Purchasing Policy that gives preference to LEED-qualified green products for cleaning supplies, office supplies, furniture, electronic equipment, lamps, and renovation materials.  And many additional initiatives such as a Solid Waste Management Policy – that requires recycling or other diversion of ongoing consumables, durable goods, facility alterations and additions – and mercury-containing lamps, have been adopted at the hotel.

Additionally, the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza’s parent company, InterContinental Hotels Group, has been awarded the 2011 Best US Hotel Chain in a survey of corporate travel buyers.  Says IHG President Jim Abrahmson, “IHG was a clear winner beating out Hilton and Marriott for best brands.  The Holiday Inn brand earned first place overall which is a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of our relaunch efforts. Travel buyers have taken notice of the changes we’ve made to improve quality and drive consistency throughout our properties.”
